Dapper Day 2017

Yesterday, I travelled to Dapper Day at Disneyland. The crowd was immense, the security was on fleek, and the fashion was as mentioned: Dapper!

Attending this free weekend event, I expected to see a subculture of class and brilliance from all that attended. What I didn’t expect was a community of buddies and friends. It was like attending another comic convention, where friends were merely there for meeting up, and they so happened to bring alot nice goodies back home. From makeup and gloves, to dresses and shoes, the market had everything you could ever want to become the Dapper style of your dreams.

I, for one, enjoyed the dance lessons and mobile barber shops. A pink Cadillac was placed in the middle of the hall, and a bar was ready near the dance floor and both photo booths. And if that wasn’t enough, you got to leave the “Dapper Day Expo” with a balloon, and go your merry way through Downtown Disney and Disneyland. All in all, it was a charming weekend.

Unlike most conventions though, Dapper Day isn’t about hype. You don’t get a Stan Lee to roar the crowds, or protestors to ruin your week. It’s simply shopping, mingling, and a whole lot of style.

To think, it all started merely through social media, just as an annual meeting up at Disneyland, by Justin Jorgensen. The style has everyone dressing in old war time fashion, ranging from 1920’s through 1950’s attire. The spin off of the idea is that people are dressed in “Disney Bound” – a style of casual clothing where people wear colors and patterns that represent their favorite Disney character.
Today, more and more meetups happen, just like this, in their own style – societies in their own fashion: Dapper, Emo, Geek, and many more.
